Robert Griffin III is giving Redskins’ fans hopes, but his first test is not an easy one facing the Saints in the Big Easy. The Saints are one of the betting favorites to win the NFC this season and while their offense is stacked Bountygate, which cost them their head coach for the season as well as a few suspended players, may affect their defense. I know the preseason does not matter, but in those games Washington was 3-1 and the Saints were 2-3.

In looking at the ATS records from last season the Saints were one of the better wagering teams going 13-3 ATS with an Over/Under record of 9-7 and the Redskins were 7-9 ATS with an Over/Under record of 7-8-1.

Washington not only moved up in the draft to take Griffin, but they also improved their receiving corps in the off-season by signing Pierre Garcon. He, Santana Moss, and TE Fred Davis will the rookie’s main targets and while the Washington offensive line has some major issues he will be facing a New Orleans pass defense that ranked 30th in the league last season.

The Skins do not have 1 lead RB, but Roy Helu, Evan Royster, and Tim Hightower will man the backfield duties and Washington will look to establish the run early in this game. The Saints had a defense run defense last season, but with their suspensions on the defensive side of the ball that may not be the case early in the season.

The Redskins’ defense was ok last season, but they will really be tested in this game against Drew Brees and a great passing offense and a rushing offense that ranked 6th in the league last season. Brees has one of the best WR corps in the NFL and star TE Jimmy Graham and RB’s Darren Sproles and Pierre Thomas lead a solid backfield.

Brian Orakpo and Ryan Kerrigan teamed up to combined for 16.5 sacks in 2011 and they must get to Brees in this game or he may torch the Washington secondary.

The Redskins’ run defense ranked 18th in the league last season and their pass defense 12th in the league. Their secondary has been shuffled around this season and they need to play well in this game facing such a great New Orleans passing attack.

Redskins vs. Saints Betting Trends

The Redskins are 3-1 ATS in their last 4 games and have an Under record of 6-2-1 in their last 9 games on the road.

The Saints have covered the spread in 12 of their last 13 home games and in their last 5 home games the posted total has gone Over every time.

In the last 6 games between these 2 NFL teams the posted total has gone Over 5 times.
