The Saints are now at .500 since they have won their last 3 games and 5 of their
last 6, but they are still home underdogs against the 7-2 49ers. The Saints are
winning, but their win over the Falcons as their only one facing a great team and
their pass defense ranks 31st in the league and their run defense ranks dead last.
The 49ers are all alone atop the NFC West, but who will start for them at QB?
Alex Smith was having a good year before suffering a concussion and in making
his first start of the season taking over for the injured Smith Colin Kaepernick
played great in a blowout win over the Bears. A starter has not been named, but
head coach Jim Harbaugh may start the hot Kaepernick since he gives the 49ers
another rushing weapon.
In their last games the 49ers looked great in a 32-7 Monday night win over the
Chicago Bears and the Saints beat a weak Oakland Raiders’ team 38-17.
On the season the 49ers are 6-4 ATS and they have and Over/Under record of 4-
5-1 and the Saints are 6-4 ATS with an Over/Under record of 6-4.
Harbaugh has a tough call naming the starter since Kaepernick completed 16 of
his 23 passes for 243 yards with TD and 0 INT in the win over Chicago. He has
a slew of weapons at his disposal and with his legs he is better than Smith at
avoiding the pass rush and running the ball. Frank Gore had a pretty good game
against the Bear and their good run defense, but can the Saints contain whoever
starts at QB and Gore since their D is so weak? Good question. Even against the
Raiders, who were down to their backup FB, the Saints gave up over 100 rushing
New Orleans does have a decent pass rush and it is key that they get to the QB
and if Kaepernick gets the start that will be harder to do since he is so mobile.
Drew Brees was plagued by the turnover in the first few games, but in the last
3 games he only has 1 INT. Marques Colston and Lance Moore are his top 2
WR targets and for the season they are each averaging over 14 yards per catch.
Brees will need a good game from the offensive line since the 49ers had 6 sacks
against the Bears with Aldon Smith racking up 5. On top of that Brees is up
against the San Francisco pass defense that is the 2nd ranked unit in the NFL.
For the last couple of games Pierre Thomas and Mark Ingram have played well
giving Brees some help on offense by running the ball and in this game they
have a very tough test since the 49ers run defense ranks 6th in the league.
