Horse Racing Betting Preparation

The weekend is fast approaching, with several interesting Derby preps on the menu for Saturday.

The $150,000 Sham Stakes, originally carded to go last Saturday, is the feature at Santa Anita, weather permitting. There is rain the forecast and two of the last three Saturday cards were washed out by the lack of proper drainage on the Pro Ride surface.

The $250,000 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct drew a competitive field of ten three year olds with eyes on heading down the Kentucky Derby Trail.

Trainer Todd Pletcher, who seems to have enough talented three year olds to fully stock the Kentucky Derby starting gate himself, will send out Three Day Rush, a son of Harlan’s Holiday who is coming off a third place finish in the Whirlaway Stakes.

Before we get to the stakes action on Saturday, there is plenty of money to be made Friday afternoon at Aqueduct.

There will be a mix of snow showers and rain, but not enough to affect the action, particularly if you are like me, firing up the wagering account and perhaps the fireplace.

Today's Play of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 4 Clm $10,000N2L (2:27 ET)

#3 Fuzzy's Story 3/1

#2 Haitian Sensation 7/2

#4 Turnpike Token 15/1

#7 Missing Link 4/1

Analysis: #3 Fuzzy's Story drops out of a straight three year old race for a $16K tag into a $10K non winners of two here. The gelding chased the early pace from the inside, had to check briefly nearing the quarterpole and flattened out late to finish third as the winner opened up a clear lead in the stretch. The gelding owns solid early and mid pace numbers and it would be no surprise to see Ramon taking this guy to the front here. He has a win and a second in three trips over a wet track.

#2 Haitian Sensation was no match for 11 length winner Telemachus in a runner up finish. The winner came back to finish second against $10K non winners of three on Feb. 14. The colt was claimed out of his last start by the Jacobson barn that is 13% winners first off the claim. The colt looks primed for a good effort in his third start off the bench.

WIN: #3 to win at 5/2 or better.

EX: 2,3 / 2,3,4,7

TRI: 2,3 / 2,3,4,7 / 2,3,4,6,7

Today’s Pick 3 Play from Aqueduct:

Starting in Race 7: $1: 5,6 / 2,3,7 / 3,5,6,7 = $24

AQU Race 7 Clm $7,500B (3:55 ET)

#5 O'Sotopretty, #6 Gracious Victory

#5 O'Sotopretty was the beaten chalk last out, stalking the early pace and finishing evenly in a non threatening fourth, catching an inside speed favoring racing strip. It was the first time in six trips over a wet track that the filly did not land in the exacta. The filly landed in the exacta in 9 of her 11 starts in '09 and now looks to rebound with a jock switch to Studart, who is having a pretty good meet with limited chances to ride live mounts. She figures to be bounce back with a better effort against this group.

#6 Gracious Victory  pressed the early pace, as eased back, got back into the mix and had her head in front in the stretch before ending up a head and a nose back in third at the wire. She makes her second start for the Chip Dutrow barn and should move forward in her second start off a 4 1/2 month break. She finished behind our top pick two and three back.

AQU Race 8 OClm $25,000N2X (4:25 ET)

#3 Goodday, #2 Anjorie, #7 Chicks Are Better

#3 Goodday dueled for the early lead while down along a deep rail and a racing strip that was playing to outside stalkers and closers. The filly could not go with the winner late, settling for the runner up spot. The filly owns a solid pace profile throughout with good early and mid pace numbers. Ramon takes over for the Chip Dutrow barn. The filly is seeking her first win since taking the restricted Vichy Stakes back in '08. This looks like a good spot and she has a decent off track pedigree.

#2 Anjorie makes her first start since checking in fourth at this level back in November in a highly graded race. Two came out of the race to win next out including the winner Meese Rocks, who won at this level in her next start, then won the state bred Personal Girl Stakes on Feb. 5.

AQU Race 9 Md $15,000 (4:55 ET)

#7 Timber Cat, #3 Smooth Kahlua, #6 Bold Direction, #5 Trial by Fire

#7 Timber Cat cuts back to a sprint after stumbling coming out of the gate and racing wide in a sixth place finish last out, catching an inner surface that was playing to inside speed. Two back at today's distance the gelding checked in a decent third in a 11 horse field. The gelding has two sibs to race, both winners, top earner Risky Gamble ($55K). The gelding gets the slight nod in a weak state bred maiden claimer.

#3 Smooth Kahlua is cutting back from a sprint where he dueled for the early lead and tired to finish sixth. He was third two back at today's level, tracking the early pace and finishing evenly, beaten 3 3/4 lengths for the top spot. The gelding owns decent early and mid pace numbers and this guy fits well in this spot.
