MLB Betting Pick

My Saturday afternoon MLB Picks takes us to the Great American Ballpark where Carlos Zambrano and the Chicago Cubs are slated to square off against Aaron Harang and the Cincinnati Reds.

The Cubs lost their initial series of the 2010 baseball season dropping two of three games heading into the first game of this series on Friday night.

The Reds avoided a home sweep at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals in walk-off fashion and sat 1-2 on the year heading into their first meeting with the Cubs on Friday.

Chicago Cubs (1-2, -$36) vs. Cincinnati Reds (1-2, -$100)

Game Date/Time: Saturday, April 10th, 1:10 ET

Game Location: Great American Ballpark, Cincinnati, OH
TV Broadcast: WGN, FOX (Ohio), XM Radio

It was far from the picture perfect outing Carlos Zambrano had hoped for heading into his Opening Day start against the Atlanta Braves.

After his teammates put three on the board for him in the 1st inning, the Venezuelan got rocked and surrendered six runs in the bottom of the inning.

He ended up allowing six hits and a whopping eight runs when the dust cleared through just 1.1 total innings of work. He enters his second start of the season with an unconscionable 54.00 ERA. The start was the shortest of his career.

He did however remain calm on the mound just like he promised he would at the outset of the season.

Big Z and the Cubs have experienced some solid success against the Reds of late winning six of his L/7 starts against them. He went 1-1 with a 1.98 ERA in a pair of 2009 starts last season.

Just like his opponent today, Aaron Harang got rocked in his first start of the season. Though he lasted five innings, the burly righty allowed five hits (2 HR) and four runs (3 ER) with a K/BB ratio of 2/2.

He showed good velocity in the 93-94 range, and felt he only made two mistakes (both HR balls) throughout the entirety of his outing.

Reds management is optimistic with the righty this season hoping he can bounce back from a poor 2009 campaign that saw him go 6-14 with a 4.21 ERA.

The Reds are 11-9 SU in his L/20 starts against the division rival Cubs, but just 1-4 SU the L/5 times he faced them at home.

MLB Baseball Pick: This is an important game for both teams #1 starters. Both Zambrano and Harang need to show the ability to bounce back for either squad to have any shot of competing in the heavily balanced NL Central.

That said; I look for Zambrano to outduel his opponent. He has the better overall stuff, and has had tremendous success in this ballpark throughout his career. The Cubs are 10-3 SU in his 13 overall Great American Ballpark starts.
On top of that, he shines against divisional opposition leading the Cubs to victories 19 of the L/26 times.

The Cubs and Zambrano are my MLB pick to come out on top in this afternoon’s match-up.
