Super Bowl 45 Preview 2011 Steelers vs Packers

Super Bowl 45 Preview

Green Bay Packers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

NFL Football Point Spread: Packers -2.5 O/U 45.5

This year’s super Bowl is a sweet one between the Packers and the Steelers, who have a combined 9 Super Bowl wins between them. This would seem to be a game between the offense of the Packers against the defense of the Steelers and that is true, but last week in the NFC title game Green Bay beat Chicago with their defense and in the 2 playoff wins for the Steelers they are averaging 27.5 ppg.

In the Packers 21-14 win over the Bears last week in the NFC championship game the Packers blew out to a 14-point lead and held onto win. Aaron Rodgers was on fire in the first 2 playoff games and in the first quarter against the Bears, but in the Chicago game he was picked off twice and did not throw a TD even though he still passed for 244 yards. He will have to get on the same page with the WR duo of Jordy Nelson and Greg Jennings, especially if Green Bay struggles to move the chains on the ground.

There is a good chance that Rodgers will have to carry the offense in the Super Bowl. Rookie RB James Starks has emerged as the lead back in the post season and last week he did have 74 rushing yards with a TD, but he only averaged 3.4 yards per carry. He may have a tough time running the ball against the great Steelers’ run defense that only gave up 70 rushing yards in their 24-19 win in the AFC title game over the New York Jets.

The Steelers gave up 219 passing yards to the Jets last week and they have to keep Rodgers from having a big game. They have to pressure him in the pocket and not allow him time to find his targets. Conversely, Rodgers has to be wary of where Pittsburgh S Troy Polamalu is at all times. The Packers’ offensive line has to make sure LB James Harrison (10.5 sacks) does not get through and take down their QB.

Ben Roethlisberger is playing in his 3rd Super Bowl and he did not play very well last week passing for only 133 yards with 0 TD and 2 INT. He will be facing a tough Green Bay passing defense, but he will not have to air it out much if RB Rashard Mendenhall has another big game. Last week he rushed for 121 yards with a TD and averaged a legit 4.5 yards per carry. If the Steelers can run the ball the Packers may be in trouble. Last week they only gave up 83 rushing yards to the Bears, but Chicago was down early and had to air it out to come back.

LB Clay Mathews has to come up big and he and the Green Bay defensive line has to stuff the run in this game.

If the Packers can light up the scoreboard, which will not be easy against the Pittsburgh defense, they have the advantage if this game becomes a shootout.

Both teams have covered the spread every time in the playoffs and this season the Packers are 14-8-1 ATS and the Steelers are 15-7 ATS.

The Steelers have covered the spread in 4 of their last 5 playoff games as an underdog and has covered in 9 of their last 10 playoff games overall.

The Packers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 playoff games as a favorite.

The Over/Under in this game is tough to call. The betting trends are a little confusing as well, as the Steelers have an Under record of 4-0 in their last 4 games as an underdog, but have an Over record of 5-1 in their last 6 playoff games as an underdog.
